Dano Festival begins on 5th May (lunar calendar) every year in Gangneung City on the east coast of Gangwon Province. It is the festival that boasts a thous year long tradition. Gangneung Dano Festival is namely the largest folk festival designated by UNESCO as an intangible legacy of masterpieces of mankind in 2005.  

  The festival starts off with a rite to the mountain spirit, followed by Danogook (farm music contest), Guano Mask Play, 50 other official events.

This is the festival which tourists can participate in activities such as the iris (Changpo in Korean) hair wash, swinging on traditional Korean seesaws, ssireum (Korean style wrestling).
